Biodiversity is the greatest treasure we have
Biodiversity is equivalent to the variety of life on Earth. It is the variety within and between all species of plants, animals and microorganisms and the ecosystems within which they live and interact. Biodiversity comprises all the millions of different species that live on our planet, as well as the genetic differences within species. It also refers to the multitude of different ecosystems in which species form unique communities, interacting with one another and the air, water and soil. Loss of biodiversity and climate change are two of the greatest global challenges.
UPM protects and enhances biodiversity
For years, biodiversity has been one of UPMs key environmental drivers when developing sustainable forest management practices. The main target of our biodiversity programme is to integrate biodiversity protection into our planting and harvesting operations. Specific species projects and case studies demonstrate and communicate biodiversity issues. The programme enables us to test how the actions meet the needs of single species. It has also created a new collaboration culture with stakeholders. As a big land owner, UPM promotes voluntary-based nature conservation, and protected areas are part of the biodiversity programme solutions as well. Our target is to have all fibres certified by 2030.
